Austria: Food

They say that the most effective way to immerse yourself in a foreign country's culture is through food. That's exactly what we did in our visit to Vienna and Salzburg, Austria.

From breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner, we indulge ourselves to Austrian local delicacies. We get to experience their authentic schnitzels, lots of Vienna sausage, local drinks like tea and melange coffee to a variety of Viennese desserts.

First stop, schnitzels!!! These huge servings of schnitzels from Schnitzelwirt will lead you to singing "My Favourite Things" from the Sound of Music. We ordered the classic Wiener Schnitzel, pork cutlet, breaded and then fried garnished with slice of lemon and Hausgeheimnis, Parisian style schnitzel with mushroom, ham and peas garnished and Saurkraut, permented cabbage on the side.

Warning: First make sure to ask for an English menu, second the servings are for sharing.
Cream coloured ponies and crisp apple strudels
Doorbells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles
Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings
These are a few of my favorite things.
(My Favourite Things lyrics)

Except this one, when we crave for Mediterranean food in Austria. I know! Haha humus, pita, falafel! All these goodness served at Neni a hidden gem in Naschmarkt. We had Hamshuka - Neni's own version of humus, ground meat and spicy chilli; Jerusalem Plate - grilled chicken with oriental spices, fresh herbs, tahina, humus(again); and Sabich - a Mischmasch of fried eggplant, humus(we don't like humus for sure), tomato-coriander salad, tahina, poached egg, amba with falafel. All these mains served with lots of Neni's pita bread.

Our first attempt to try their local coffee Melange at Cafe Savoy.

We always have room for their local coffee Melange and desserts like apple strudel and this humongous fluffy egg sweet souffle called Salzburger Nockerl from Mozart's Cafe in Salzburg.

Erich is a great little breakfast and brunch place, serving rise and shine customisable brekky.

And of course some tea for the "Tita" spirit in us when we just want to chill, people watch and rest our happy feet from almost whole day of walking. Honestly its more of we wanted to escape the centralised aircon outside and feel warmer inside a cafe.
