A Man Fell in a Hole

“A man fell in a hole. He fell in a hole and he could not get out. A traveler passed by, he told the man to meditate to purify his mind, and when he reached Nirvana all suffering would stop. The man did as he was told, but he remained in the hole. Another man appeared. He explained that the hole didn't exist and neither in fact did the man. It was all an illusion. The man, who did not exist was still stuck in the hole that was not there. Another visitor arrived. He instructed the man to do good deeds to improve his Karma. Although he would still die in the hole, he might be reincarnated as something magnificent. Another man looked down from above, he taught the man to pray 5 times a day facing east and to follow 5 important tenets. If he was faithful one day perhaps the divine would set him free. The man prayed as best he could, but he was losing strength, and in the hole he remained. Another man appeared, but there was something different about him. He called down to the man in the hole and asked him if he wanted to be free. This man lowered himself into the earth and into the pit. He took hold of the man and dragged him into the light. The man in the hole who could not get himself out of the hole was saved.”

CCF: Be Free!

August 17, 2014 - Sunday Message by Pastor Jay Jackson

Genesis chapters 12 to 21 walks us through the covenant of God to Abraham until the fulfillment of His promises.

Beginning from Abraham's journey when God asked him to leave his country and go to the land He will show him with a promise that God would make him into a great nation and bless him tremendously. So at the age of 75, Abraham moved out in faith. Abraham believed God but reality remains that Sarah was barren. Ten years passed, still his wife remains childless. This time Sarah, in an attempt to help God carry out His promises(as if God needs our help) suggested Abraham to sleep with her servant Hagar and later bore him a son they named Ishmael.
When God makes promises, sometimes we don't always see it in accordance to God's plan. Just like Sarah, we often take matters into our hands, trying so hard to make His promises come true through our own efforts that are not in line with His specific directions. But thankfully, no matter how small our faith to Him, God remains true to His words.

Twenty-five years passed since the day God gave his word to Abraham, when He confirmed His covenant. Abraham was 100 years old and Sarah was 90 when God finally gave them Isaac. A time when its almost impossible for Sarah to conceive and deliver a child because of old age. But the seemingly impossible for us are God's avenue of manifesting His power.
Our God is a God who makes promises and keeps it. For it is very His nature and character. When God said it, that settles it! When God said it, consider it done! Our freedom in Christ today is the direct result of Abraham's decision to believe in God.

Galatians 4:21-31 gives us the account of Hagar and Sarah, describing the covenant of the slave and the free woman.

"His son by the slave woman was born according to the flesh, but his son by the free woman was born as the result of a divine promise." --Galatians 4:23

People are saved because of their faith in Christ, not because of what they do. The author Paul, contrasted those who are enslaved to the law(represented by Hagar, the slave wife) with those who are free from the law(represented by Sarah, the freeborn wife). In the end Sarah triumphed because God kept His promise to give her a son, just as those who worship Christ in faith will also triumph.

"But the Jerusalem that is above is free, and she is our mother. For it is written:
'Be glad, barren woman, you who never bore a child; shout for joy and cry aloud, you who were never in labor; because more are the children of the desolate woman than of her who has a husband.'
Now you, brothers and sisters, like Isaac, are children of promise. " --Galatians 4:26-28

When God made a promise, He is not asking you to fight so that you can be victorious. He is asking you to surrender, so that you can be delivered. Abraham and Sarah made a mistake of trying to fulfill God's promise through themselves and this act altered the course of human history forever.

There will be moments that God will ask you to do something in line with His promise -- step up in leadership, join a small group, get involved in a ministry, build a family, start your own small group, move to a new place or take that new role at work. He asks, not for you to become dependable but for you to be more dependent to God. Likewise when God plants seed in your heart, He intends for you to nurture it. Hold on to those promises with all the faith that you can muster. Believe Him. Don't live in the fear that you don't have what it takes. Surrender to Almighty God who have what it takes to accomplish it all.

Visa Checkout Singapore team bravely embrace the thrill and excitement as we held our team building activity at MegaZip Adventure Park in Sentosa.

This Climbmax experience is an exercise of courage, vigor and endurance. But more than that, it led me hanging with the following insights:

1. Life is one big obstacle course

You succeed at one thing and then you move on to the next. When an obstacle is tough, you try harder. When an obstacle is insurmountable, you change course. But you never sit down and refuse to finish. --Bethenny Frankel

2. Believe in yourself
Every great dream is first conceived in the mind. If others did it, you can do it too. If others stumble, you can show them how its done (wink)

3. Aim high
If you fail you can always get back up and try again but if you succeed you build that confidence and grit within you. I am glad I took the maximum level and decently finished it.

4. Face your fears
Taking that first shaky step on that rope could be your baby step in conquering your fears. Do not let your fears limit you from the possibility of achieving your full potential.

5. Balance
Just like how work-life balance is essential to your well-being. The way you balance and maneuver your body weight in these high ropes is your advantage.

6. Focus
To surpass each wobbly cables and get to the next post is physically and emotionally challenging. You can dwell on the difficulties OR encourage altophobia(fear of heights) OR you can focus on the goal of finishing well by taking each step deliberately until you reach the succeeding post.

7. Discover yourself
While there are problems beneficial to go through with the support of your family or friends, there will be bumps in your life that you need to figure out alone. Similar to this challenge, in the end you get to know your strength and weaknesses better.

8. Look beyond the obstacles
Yes it could be fearful to stand 15 meters above the ground plus the fact that you need to step on those shaky ropes and wooden platform, but along with it comes the access to the breathtaking view of the jungle canopy of Imbiah Hill while completing the climb.

9. Have a good grip
A powerful grip and upper body strength is a good foundation when doing Climbmax. Similarly, hold on to the essentials of life - relationships, family, friends, experience and learning. These are the ones worth pursuing for.

10.  Take your pace
It's not how fast you finish the track but how comfortable you are while doing it. Take your time and get that momentum flowing.
