To Fast or Not to Fast?

Filipinos loves to eat! Some even live to eat rather than eat to live... To fast means to run away from our passions(like eating) and run towards God expecting Him to strengthen us. Its like saying "Lord I gave up food, but fill me with Your presence."

We fast from food to feast with God.

Here are some guidelines:

1. WHY SHOULD WE FAST?
* Fasting exposes our heart
* Fasting expresses our hunger for God
* We fast for guidance/direction
Lord stop confirming what I like, instead show me what You want in my life. (tough prayer huh!)
* We fast for healing
Our ball game is to PRAY! It's God's call to answer or not. Let's do our part!
* We fast to intercede for the nation
* We fast for help to break sin bondages
Isaiah 58:6 (New International Version)
"Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke?"

Principle: True fasting turns our attention off ourselves and unto God.

2. WHY SHOULD WE NOT FAST?
* Fasting is not to provoke God to love us more
* Fasting is not a "get-rich scheme" to holiness
* Fasting is not a substitute for obedience
1 Samuel 15:22 (New International Version)
"But Samuel replied: Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the voice of the LORD? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams."
* Fasting is not a means to loose weight

Principle: Fasting is not meant to change God! It is meant to change us!

3. DANGERS OF FASTING
* Legalism and Spiritual Pride
Matthew 6:16 (New International Version)
"When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full."

4. PRACTICAL ASPECTS OF FASTING
* How long will you commit to fast?
* What type of fast will you take? (water, liquid, one meal a day or even things that's taking our time for God like internet, activities, games etc.
* How much time will you spend in prayer?

5. REWARDS OF FASTING
A deeper intimacy in our relationship with God.
Matthew 6:17-18 (New International Version)
"But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."

Principle: Simply becoming more intimate with God as we fast is the precious and priceless reward.
-- A message from Pastor Jess in preparation for the coming prayer and fasting week.

Honestly I've never taught of fasting that way... I came with an anxious heart but went home with an excited spirit and a heart full of joy, expecting God to do great things as I consecrate myself to Him.

Lastly here's a must read article about preparation for a prayer and fasting.

When I say... "I am a Christian"

When I say..."I am a Christian"
I'm not shouting "I am saved"
I'm whispering "I get lost!"
"That is why I chose this way."

When I say..."I am a Christian"
I don't speak of this with pride.
I'm confessing that I stumble
and need someone to be my guide.

When I say..."I am a Christian"
I'm not trying to be strong.
I'm professing that I'm weak
and pray for strength to carry on.

When I say..."I am a Christian"
I'm not bragging of success.
I'm admitting I have failed
and cannot ever pay the debt.

When I say..."I am a Christian"
I'm not claiming to be perfect,
my flaws are too visible
but God believes I'm worth it.

When I say..."I am a Christian"
I still feel the sting of pain
I have my share of heartaches
which is why I seek His name.

When I say..."I am a Christian"
I do not wish to judge.
I have no authority.
I only know I'm loved.

Conquered Corregidor!

Corregidor Island! Sadly but one of the underrated tourist attraction that most of us Filipinos are missing out. Beneath its 500 hectare land lies a rich history of heroism of the Filipino soldiers during the World War II.

Thanks to Sun Cruises for making Corregidor trip accessible and worthwhile. We grabbed their overnight budget tour package of Php2500.00/person inclusive of:
- roundtrip ferry transfers (manila-corregidor-manila);
- shrine, terminal, and entrance fees;
- guided island tour onboard tranvia bus;
- buffet lunch with welcome drink on day 1 and
- overnight accommodation at Corregidor Inn.

December 28, 2009 - we reached CCP Complex Terminal A at 7:15am just in time to check in our luggages. On board MV Sun Cruiser II of Magsaysay shipping company which can hold 285 passengers and runs 28 knots, we departed Manila 8:20 am and reached Corregidor at 9:40 am. Less than an hour and a half trip, Corregidor welcomes us with lush scenery, calm seas and panoramic view.

At the North Dock, awaits tranvia buses that would bring tourist in the different attractions of the island...

We hop on tranvia bus # 9 that carries 26 adults and 6 kids with our bus driver Mang Rolly and the best tourist guide in the island Mang Edward... All set?! Let the tour begin!

During the guided tour 10:00 - 11:20am then resumed 12:20-2:30pm, we experienced these places:

Malinta Tunnel

Filipino War Memorial

Japanese Garden of Peace Park

Grubbs and Battery Hearns

Mile Long Barracks

Pacific War Memorial

Of course the tour will not be complete without seeing Middleside Barracks, Cine Corregidor, Filipino American Memorial Park, Top side Museum, Old Spanish Lighthouse and Geary.

Just like Corregidor which comes from the Spanish word “corregir,” meaning to correct... in this island we realigned our hearts with our Maker while enjoying the wonders of his creation. Oh Corregidor! What a gift to our country!

Finally, I brought home with me a taste of nature, remembrance of Philippine history, blissful memories and an inspiring word from Manuel Quezon's epitaph, "The Filipino is not inferior to any man of any race."

Ooops and lots of pics ;) see?!

Here are more travel tips:
If you're looking for a cheaper way to visit Corregidor, you could take the Sun Cruise trip at Php1000.00(back and forth), here you'll need to pay 150.00 as entrance fee to the island. Instead of the guided tour, you could rent a jeepney at 200.00 for the first 2 hours. For your accommodation, the island has hostel rooms with aircon at 1500.00(good for 4 persons) while the non-aircon rooms are 800.00(good for 4 persons), or you could setup a tent at your own risk ;)

You can also take the Manila-Bataan-Corregidor route via provincial buses going to Bataan. Camaya Point, Bataan offers daily ferry trip to Corregidor starts at 8:30am and returns 3:00pm, for only Php200.00/head or chartered rent of Php3000.00(max 16 persons). For details, contact Tony aka A9 at 0916-4759064.

There is also Baywalk Convenience Store located at the North Dock, where you can buy food. They'll prepare and cook as you order, so don't expect fast food ;)
We ordered tuna omelette with 1 century tuna(45.00) and 2 eggs(20.00 each) plus cooking charge of 30.00; 2 bowls of ginisang munggo(45.00 each) and 3 cups of rice(15.00 each)... total of 230.00 good for 3! not bad huh?! :D

B1G 5 Single's Retreat 2009

November 28-30, 2009 @Chateau Royale, Nasugbu Batangas - a 3-day, 2-night escape from the active life of the city to spend quiet time and solitude with our God... it's time to gas up, recharge our batteries and gear ourselves towards the direction the Lord is leading us to take.

More than 1040 singles gathered together in this retreat, with one end in mind - to be one with God!

Though only a 3-day event but for me it seems forever, a lifetime of experience closest to my heart.

A time to share...

A time to listen and learn...

A time to get out of the boat...

A time to surrender...

A time to celebrate...

A time to meet NFF (new found friends)...

A time to have fun...

B1G 5, a big event as big as our God! Indeed a year-ender blast and a milestone of my 2009.
